Bird Seed Heart Tree Ornaments

Give nature some love this valentines day month by making these adorable bird seed hearts to hang on the trees in your yard! Even young toddlers can help! Bird seed ornaments are fun little "i love you" gifts  for friends and family, preschool teachers, or keep for yourself <3

Materials:

  • 4 cups bird seed
  • ¾ cups flour
  • ½ cups water
  • 3 tablespoons corn syrup
  • 1 packet of unflavored gelatine
  • string or twine
  • bowl
  • wax paper

Directions:

1. Start with your birdseed in a large mixing bowl

2. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix till fully combined to create a gelatin mixture. It does not matter if it is cold water or boiling water as the gelatin will set with either.

3. Using a spoon or your hands, gently push the birdseed mixture into the cookie cutter. Fill the cookie cutter to the top.

Quick Tip:

If you have metal cookie cutters, spraying the inside using cooking spray will help to ensure the mixture does not stick to it. As a matter of fact, you may want to spray cookie cutters regardless of what your favorite cookie cutters are made of.

4. Lay onto a piece of wax paper or piece of parchment on a cookie sheet.

5. Insert a straw to poke a hole towards the top. Let harden at room temperature for 2 hours or more. We like to let them harden overnight!

6. Hang with a piece of twine. Cut your thread/ twine approximately 1 foot. Then thread through the hole, and tie the ends together in a knot.

Note: You can make these birdseed ornaments without gelatin. In that case, combine all the above ingredients excluding the gelatin. Rather than drying overnight, bake the ornaments in the oven at 170 degrees or the lowest temperature on your oven for an hour and a half. Let cool, then they are ready to hang.
