We are working on a Mutual Aid program to support a Brooklyn-based Community Organization that gives women free access to Doulas during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. These are high risk women who qualify because of their income level. It is essential that they enter the NYC hospital system with a Doula to advocate for themselves and their birth.
Racial disparities in maternal mortality is a national crisis. In NYC, Black women account for only 23% of births, but 57% of pregnancy-related deaths (CCC) and are 12x more likely to die than white women.
Most childbirth related deaths are preventable.
We have been paired with a mother of a 6 month old baby who has provided us with a list of her immediate needs. Her list is extensive and includes a car seat, stroller, nursery items, diapering, feeding, safety and essentials.
